Social-Skills Connection Groups

For those diagnosed with autism spectrum and related disorders

Groundbreakers is a Social Skills-focused program designed to help children and adolescents who are struggling socially.  All groups meet one time per week.  The groups are designed for those who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder; however, other diagnoses that lead to struggles in social settings may also be appropriate. Examples include ADHD or anxiety.

There are 3 different groups available based upon age and developmental level.  Current age groups that are offered are: Ages 8-10, 10-12, and 13-17

Appropriate candidates for the group should be able to maintain physical safety towards themselves and others and can function appropriately in a small group setting.

Ages 8-10:  Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30pm

Ages 10-12:  Wednesdays from 6:00-7:00pm

Ages 13-17:  Thursdays from 5:30-7:00pm

* All groups are offered at the MMHC Apple Valley location only.

The groups for ages 8-12 are highly structured with fun activities that revolve around a weekly topic.  Primary skills taught are those regarding communication, friendship, boundaries, conflict resolution, impulse control, managing anger and anxiety, perspective taking, flexible thinking, creative problem solving, and tolerating unpreferred activities etc.  Practicing skills around these topics in a small group setting with increased support can be beneficial for many children.

The group for ages 13-17 is somewhat less structured with more time spent processing and sharing experiences/concerns.  Weekly topics are also incorporated but take on a more flexible role.  Some of the topics covered include emotion regulation, anger management, conflict resolution, self-advocacy, self-care, friendships, bullying, embracing uniqueness and finding strengths, dating/romantic relationships, etc.

Anyone interested in participating, please contact Groundbreakers staff to get more information and to set up an intake.  Phone # 651-395-5796

*All groups are billed under group psychotherapy and covered by most insurance companies.
