What is the difference between a “psychologist” and a “psychiatrist”?

Generally speaking, a “psychologist” is a Mental Health Professional who is trained to help individuals better understand themselves and learn why they behave in certain ways, and to help those individuals modify their perceptions and adjust their behaviors to achieve greater happiness and fulfillment.

On the other hand, a “psychiatrist” is a specially-trained medical doctor who has developed an expertise to delve more closely into the biochemistry of the brain — to try to adjust chemical imbalances that can cause mental distress and other mental disorders. Many psychiatrists also offer psychological counseling.

Please contact us if you are unsure if you should meet with a psychologist or a psychiatrist.

I’m in crisis, what should I do?

Our psychiatry hours are Monday – Friday from 8am – 4pm. If you feel you are in crisis between these hours you may contact our psychiatry assistant at (651) 365-8260 to get an advisement from your provider.

If you have an urgent need after hours that can’t wait until the next business day, please go to the nearest hospital emergency room for evaluation and advisement.

Here are other resources for crisis:

MMHC does not provide 24 hour emergency psychiatry call coverage. Therefore, in order to safely receive services here, it is important that you have a safety plan in place should you experience any potential emergency conditions, such as suicidal or homicidal ideation or serious medication side effects.

How do I request a medication refill?

Please contact your pharmacy & ask for a refill request at least 5 days prior to needing the medication. The pharmacy will fax a refill request to your provider.

To request a refill of a medication that is a controlled substance, you must request this from the clinic by phone at least 5 days prior to needing the medication. When leaving a voicemail for an controlled substance refill request please leave your full name, date of birth, name medication, and dose that is needed. Please be aware that most psychiatry providers require that you have a future appointment for a medical check scheduled in order to authorize medication refills.
